LIS Post Master's Certificate Program

The exponential growth of recorded knowledge and the advent of digital technology have combined to transform librarianship. This transformation means an entirely new skill set is required of librarians today. Librarians enrolled in this certificate will update their skills and renew their knowledge in light of the new technological changes in the profession. Most courses within this program are fully online.

For students who wish to continue their education and professional development after earning an accredited library and information science master's degree, the School offers an 18 hour certificate. More information may be found by going to the USF Graduate Certificates page and reviewing the criteria for the LIS post master's certificate. Students must hold a master's degree from an ALA and regionally accredited institution with a minimum 3.0 GPA.

School Library Media Specialists Certificate Program

For students who do not wish to pursue the M.A. degree, the School offers an 18 hour certificate in school media. More information may be found by going to the USF Graduate Certificates page and reviewing the criteria for the School Library Media Specialist Certificate.

This certificate is designed to enhance the knowledge and capabilities of those persons who wish to take the FTCE subject area exam for school media specialist K-12. Alternatively it would also be valuable for those persons who have taken and passed the FTCE subject area test and are eligible for certification as school library media specialist but wish to become more aware of the roles and responsibilities of the media specialist.

Those earning a school media certificate are still required to take the Florida Teacher Certifcation Examination in Educational Media Specialist.

Undergraduate Certificate Program in National Intelligence

The University of South Florida School of Information is happy to announce it is now home to a federally-funded Intelligence Community Center of Academic Excellence - IC CAE, and Certificate Program in National Intelligence. This program is funded by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) through the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA). The current certificate program has been exceptionally successful, and has had a wonderful impact on the students involved. Through a combination of existing courses across USF, and specialized workshops, seminars, and internship opportunities, students receive a solid intellectual foundation for careers in the intelligence community. USF's Program in National Intelligence organizes an annual trip for select students in the program, as well. This past May the trip involved special visits to the CIA, NSA, White House, and a number of other agencies, and previous years have involved overseas tours of foreign government agencies.

We are fortunate to have two exceptional leaders with extensive experience leading the IC CAE:

  • The Director of the Program in National Intelligence, IC CAE, Mr. Walter Andrusyszyn, has an extensive background in both business and government. Mr. Andrusyszyn earned a master's degree in law and diplomacy from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy in Massachusetts. He also has a bachelor's degree in history, German, and English from New York University.
  • The Deputy Director of the Program in National Intelligence, IC CAE, Dr. Barbara Bennington. Dr. Bennington completed her Ph.D. in the Department of Communication at the University of South Florida, focusing on Organizational Communication. Her dissertation analyzes leadership decision-making and public communication in emerging and unpredictable threat and crisis situations affecting large complex government organizations.

The Certificate Program in National and Competitive Intelligence is designed to promote students' analytical capabilities, not only improving their competitiveness in the employment process, but also giving them solid intellectual foundations for demanding professional careers. The program helps prepare students for careers in government, especially intelligence positions, as well as analytical executive positions in the banking, insurance, and the pharmaceutical industries. It includes workshops and seminars that complement students' major course of study. Those who complete the certificate program should be able to effectively gather, analyze, and evaluate information and present conclusions both orally and in writing.
