Comprehensive Exam

The current culminating assessment for students in the USF Master's in Library and Information Science is a "Comprehensive Exam". The Comprehensive exam is a written paper that exhibits the student's understanding and application of the learning outcomes of the program. It is administered during the semester of graduation over a period of one week. The comprehensive examination must be taken in the semester that a student graduates, so students should plan accordingly. The University of South Florida requires that students must be enrolled for a minimum of 2 hours of graduate credit during the semester when the comprehensive examination is taken (see the USF Office of Graduate Studies). Comprehensive exam dates are published in the Canvas Organization site under the Comprehensive tab. Your completed graduation application and exam registration form serve as your declaration to take the comprehensive exam. Students are provided with a choice of questions covering various relevant topics in the field and are to answer one in the form of a written research paper. NOTE: Those needing consideration for disabilities, religious holidays, or other issues should contact the faculty chair of the comprehensive exam committe as instructed in Canvas.

Students entering the graduate program in fall 2016 and thereafter are required to create an ePortfolio as the culminating assessment. Graduate students admitted prior to the fall 2016 catalog have the option of completeling the comprehensive exam OR the ePortfolio. Click here for more information.
